Hair Color Shadowing

So I've been working over the years on a technique called COLOR SHADOWING.   We hear a lot about highlights and what I call "LOWE-lights," but I've always thought, as an artist, that bright always appears brighter in the presence of shadows (or contrast).   Color shadowing is a wonderful technique that I've been practicing for almost 10 years now adding "shadows" in various panels of the hair to accentuate color, create gorgeous dimension, and deliver gorgeous results in the presence of light and dark tones.

By applying the shadowing effect, I'm pretty aggressive with deeper tones of color.  Most stylists apply lowlights only a level or two darker than the highlight end result.  For me, I use 3, 4, 5 levels of difference to create true "shadows" in the overall end result.  A lot of people confuse lowlights or contrast and interpret that their blonde may be be as blonde, or that the overall result won't be as bright. Not always the case.  It's true deeper tones to create an overall "level difference" but when applied well, the bright appears brighter as a result and I think the grow-out lasts even longer.

Ask your hair stylist about color shadowing or adding (threaded) lowlights (not chunky) to your hair color 3-4 tones DARKER than your highlight result.

HAVE FUN and enjoy the color.

Hallmark Home and Family Hair Tips for Summer with Billy Lowe

Well it's here.  Lots of tips, techniques and recaps from today's HOME AND FAMILY SHOW sharing summertime hair tips.  Funny thing - as I was leaving the set yesterday there were so many tourists, tour buses and people taking photos of the set, hoping to see that someone famous, and I drove off the lot thinking how truly lucky I am to get to do what I do, where I do, and with some amazing friends & colleagues.

Obviously as a health and beauty expert, sun, sand and surf affects more than just our hair.  We also need to take good care of our skin so many of these tips are "crossover" tips on caring for yourSELF this summer.     So just what ARE these great tips for summer?

WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR HAIR.

  • Wide brim hats (hats in general).    These help protect hair, top of head, hairline area and some of the neck/shoulder area from excess sun exposure.   Don't forget the guys this season and encourage them to wear hats.
  • SPF STICK.   LOVE them.    A lot of people are sensitive to sprays or lotions and SPF Sticks are just like small deodorant sticks that you can rub on.
  • Protect the top of your hair or part-line by using the SPF Stick or spray a light sunscreen at partline/scalp area.   Don't forget the hairline and the back of your neck.
  • Apply leave-in conditioners or use products with sunflower.   Sunflower is a natural UV defender.
  • HAIR SERUMS.   Here's the key.  When there's moisture in the hair, it's more prone to frizzing. When hair frizzes it becomes weak brittle and prone to more damage.    Obviously we recommend GLOSS & TOSS hair shine & treatment serum to smooth hair, lock down the cuticle layer and leave hair looking & feeling smooth.
  • Shampoo & condition your hair immediately after swimming.   Don't allow chlorine to dry in your hair as it can discolor it.
  • Use baking soda in your shampoo to help detox or break-down any seasonal build-up.   Just remember to condition well.

THE HOT STYLE FOR SUMMER:     Beachy Waves
Obviously you want to avoid excess heat during summer months so this technique is great, easy, and allows hair to cool and take soft tousled shape without curling irons or hot rollers.     Simply blow-dry hair smooth using a round brush.  Remember the size of the bend is determined by the size of your brush.    I used a small 2" round on the client for the show.  As each section is dry, wrap the section around your fingers and clip to scalp area with a classic duck bill clip.   You can find these anywhere.   Finish with a light-hold spray and allow to cool.   Release clips, allow hair to fall, shake loose and voila.

Stay tuned for these and other great beauty tips.   To book Billy Lowe for a salon appointment or on location event, please call 310-430-4045 or visit billylowe.com & send an email.

Summertime Hair Tips Continued

Well if you've been following here or on Twitter, or even Instagram, you'll know that we have a VERY exciting segment coming up on the HALLMARK HOME AND FAMILY SHOW which airs Wednesday June 24, 2015.  Summertime hair tips, what to take when you travel and more.  Kym Douglas joins in on the fun and we even met some fun friends during the segment and learned about home tips, DIY tips, pancakes, and potential food hazards around the house.     Remember to tune in daily to the Hallmark Home & Family show for exciting segments each and every day.

Welcome Home.

Happy Father's Day

Even though I live so far away from "my old man," it's always fun  to look back on old photos, put some things together and send him and he gets a "big ol' kick" out of all of it.    Basically -my dad is my hero.  We didn't grow up with extravagant things, but we certainly didn't live in poverty.  In fact, I don't think we would have known the difference.

I come from a very large family both immediate and extended.  My Grandmother had 5 kids (my father's mom) and each of her kids were very close and they all had kids.  Summertime and holiday times at Grandma's house kept us all close and our family has and always will be super connected.

Today technology allows us to piece things together so quickly like photo collages and items to post here or there and it makes sharing memories "a snap."

To my dad,  the man I thought I didn't want to be anything like, I want so much to walk in your footsteps, as I did when I was a little boy.   I admire you, I honor you, I respect, love and adore you.   You're my friend, my father, and my faithful prayer warrior.   I know I am divinely guided, loved and protected because of you.    It is an honor to be your first born son.

Your Little Billy

Summertime Hair Tips

Summer is here and it's time for SUN, SAND & SURF!

This week I'll be sharing some great tips and techniques, once again, on the Hallmark Home & Family Show.  From hair color to products, styles and trends, be sure to tune in on Wednesday June 24, 2015.   Check local listings for details.

Then the following week I'll be in Charlotte yet again for a  gorgeous weekend of cut & color services.  The year sure has been a busy one so far but I'm enjoying all that's coming with the  season.  Believe it or not - I'm actually doing a little  cooking these days.   ME.   Yes, me.    It's so funny because when I'm on set or in production - there are usually food trucks or craft services that keep us fed so cooking at home is not something high on my priority list.  I certainly keep things like fruit, cereal, veggies or yogurt (and certainly snacks for my dog) but full on crock-pot dishes or baked hams?  FORGET IT.   I'm the epitome of "Bachelor."

I'm in the salon today working up segment pieces for this week and thinking of all the things I have to do to get ready for travels next week, clients are sitting here with color processing and I  thought I'd take a moment to wish everyone a great weekend.  Don't forget about your dads, friends, spouses, and family in general who are dads (physically and in spirit).

Stay tuned for more great tips.
