Aromatherapy Associates

At Lowelights, our offices swim in a culmination of fragrances.  Some members like lavender, others like patchouli, but they all meld together to create an intoxicating workplace which we love coming to.  But when we received our Aromatherapy Associates Essential Travel Oils samples, the world stopped and the heavens parted.  This 4 piece mini set is the perfect pairing of essential oils and each 0.25oz size is easy to bring along with you wherever you go.

We spoke to our good friend Roja Dove, one of the most quoted authorities in the world of fragrances, who said "Smell is the first sense we have.  It's what bonds us to our mothers.  It's not food, it's smell."   And these tiny travelers by Aromatherapy Associates are a must-have for every vanity or bedtime table.  Priced at $53, these can be found online at, as well as fine retailers around the world including Canyon Ranch, St. Regis Monarch Beach and Mandarin Oriental Hotels and spas nationwide.   Word has it that Danni Minogue (Kylie's little sister) is a huge fan of this line.  Let us know what you think.

Beauty Sleep

We've all heard the saying "Gotta get my beauty sleep."   Or perhaps, you're the type of person that enjoys an afternoon "cat nap."  But just how much beauty sleep do we really need?  LoweLights' own Billy Lowe believes people don't need as much sleep as what they may believe.  But we took it a step further and spoke to medical professionals to see what they had to say.

Most Doctors agreed that we should listen to our bodies when it comes to needing rest (unless bad habits are being formed).  Our bodies know about how much sleep we need and if we're feeling exhausted or fatigued we should definitely find time for rest.  The interesting thing we'd like to note is that mothers of newborns (and even college students much of the time) often function on 5 or 6 hours of sleep a night and do just fine yet there are many people out there who declare their need for 8, 9 or even 10 hours of sleep a night.

"I don't believe people need that much sleep!"  Billy Lowe proclaims.  "When we are sleeping that much, we become dehydrated.  Dehydration leads to fatigue.  During a normal day, we feed our bodies with food and  hydration and going 8-10 hours with no hydration at all would seemingly cause extreme dehydration and constant fatigue."

Lowe, who operates on about 6 hours of sleep a night, is a non-stop go-getter who believes that while we all need our beauty sleep, it doesn't have to be excessive. There's nothing like a warm cozy bed but at some point, you have to get out of it.   And if you need to, get up in the middle of the night for a sip of water to stay hydrated and keep the body functioning normally.  We wanna know what you think.

Dish pan hands? Not anymore.

Day to day weather, environment and activities can really take a toll on your hands.  But did you know that signs of aging show up first around the eyes, neckline and hands?  That's because the skin is thinnest in these areas with less "cushion" to support it.   With that said, it's very important to take care of these areas and to treat them like delicate fabric.  Personally, in my salon experience, my hands become dry, cracked and very uncomfortable but I've come up with a few helpful ways to keep my hands looking and feeling their best.

  1. Exfoliate!  This helps remove layers of dead surface cells and keeps hands looking great.   Skin around the nail bed gets cracked and can harden, causing nail area to become dry, split, and feel very uncomfortable.  Exfoliation helps get rid of dead skin and keeps it looking soft and supple.  It also helps moisturizer to its job.
  2. Moisturize daily and keep moisturizers with you as needed for extra comfort and support.  We are often touching things all day long and the oils from our hands wear off onto other things.  We need to replenish those oils frequently to keep hands looking great.
  3. Avoid hot packs in the salons or day spas.   Overheating feels great but can cause hands to be uncomfortable.
  4. When washing dishes or cleaning house, or other daily chores or activities, be mindful of your skincare and skincare needs.  Replenish and reapply products as needed to keep skin looking and feeling comfortable.
  5. Some of my personal favorite ingredients:  Shea butter, jojoba oil, and products that feel rich and creamy.
Take care of your hands.  Treat them well, and they'll look and feel great for many years to come.

Taxi Services

Today I'm on a bit of a rant and have discovered the BEST way to take care of your taxi driver.

A girl in heels schlepping heavy totes to set is never an easy task. The cab driver pulled up to the apartment, helped me with one bag after I made my way to the boot of the car, and I continued to load the rest.  As I got out I handed him $7 which was for a quick ride up the street to set, and then I got out (he did not).

"Should I unload my own bags?"  I asked.

"Yes please!"  he retorted .

So girls the lesson is this.  When the cabbie drops you off - GET OUT OF THE CAR.    Trust me he'll get out with you.  Have him help you unload the bags and THEN pay/tip him for the services.  If you hand him the money first inside the car, he'll sit there and let you help yourself.

Vince Camuto Eau de Parfum

The word is out, the launch is on! is all over this one.  The sexy shoe designer coveted by Katie Holmes (and shhh!! Rihanna even gives up her Louboutins for this one!),  Vince Camuto proudly launches his first fragrance.  This gorgeous bottle gives us a contemporary, sophisticated feel yet the fragrance never fails to be feminine. As this alluring essence opens, every man in sight finds his senses deliciously teased with the delicate blossoms of a rare Chinese flower, the nectar of Osmanthus. Then the rich essence of Bulgarian white rose surfaces.  He's a goner - ALMOST! Intrigued enough to stick around, the leather notes begin to surface - a hot counterpoint to the cool floral of night blossoming jasmine. Coming closer now, lured in by the familiarity of vanilla, mesmerized by patchouli, hot Brazilian amber...then comes the final hook: leathery musk. Roll credits. End of story. She got her man...And her man got...Stay tuned. Vince Camuto for MEN is coming in 2012.

The First Fragrance from Vince Camuto is available in a fabulously chic glass flacon adorned with the classic crest that is the signature of the Camuto fashion house.   $60 and up at and Vince Camuto boutiques will be popping up here, there and everywhere this Fall.

Special Events - Hair and Makeup

Backstage hair, makeup & wardrobe run through for Billy Lowe
Who in the world would use hair & makeup for an executive golf tournament or a board meeting?  Why would anyone book a beauty event for an annual business summit?   The answer - you might just be surprised.

Though suits and ties don't require a lot of hair & make-up, much of what happens behind the scenes does.   The Billy Lowe and team were invited to an annual executive retreat to produce a beauty lounge for the wives and guests, while the executives were in their meetings each day.  It was a wonderful weekend full of makeovers, gift bags, how to's, pampering treatments and so much more.  The guests had a great time, the hair and makeup team had a great time and everyone left the week full of relaxation, beauty and having learned a new tip or two.

So whether you're launching a new product and want to drive retail and visibility, or you're a large (or small) corporation and just want to provide something special for your staff, hair & makeup talent is brought on for more than you might think.  Check out our SPECIAL EVENTS page for some photos of our work, opportunities for services, and so much more.  We look forward to working with you soon, and continuing to provide great hair & make-up services for our clients around the world.

Bridal Hair - Wedding Day

A Billy Lowe hair/make-up wedding
Though summer is almost over, back to school isn't the only thing on peoples' minds for fall.  It's true - many weddings take place in the fall, one of the most beautiful times of year.  From themed weddings to more classic engagements, weddings in the fall are perhaps some of the most romantic ever.

When it comes to wedding day beauty, however, I suggest planning well in advance (a year in fact) especially when it comes to your hair & make-up.  Here's what it looks like.

1.  Avoid last minute appointments with a hair stylist or make-up artist simply to avoid any last minute uh-ohs.
2.  Start planning your cut & color a year in advance (unless you've made the decision to marry a week from now) especially if you have longer hair.  Keeping hair looking the most consistent for the longest period of time is a great way to be sure hair looks its best on your wedding day.
3.  At 6 months prior to your wedding, start looking at products and tools you should be focusing on for day-to-day styling.  Be sure you are on a great skincare ritual and that you're paying close attention to diet and exercise.  Last minute crash diets are certainly not helpful (nor healthy) before trying to slip into a dress.
4.  At 3 months prior, hair color and overall cut should be fairly finalized and it's upkeep from here. If you are planning to make a last minute stylist change, this is the time to do it and do not delay!
5.  At 1-2 weeks prior to your wedding is the perfect time to have that last cut & style/color application so hair doesn't look too over-processed for the wedding day.  It also gives hair time to grow in and soften.

Finally, do your homework.  Attend bridal shows, make inspiration or look-books for yourself, gather ideas from friends and family (but remember the day is yours).  Most of all - have fun.   The most consistent you are with your hair & beauty services prior to your wedding, the better your outcomes will be on your wedding day.

Clarisonic Mia - Great colors

I think by now the world knows what a Clarisonic fan I am.  But this year, the Clarisonic Mia has exciting news and lots of colors to choose from.  The classic Clarisonic device was developed a number of years ago to help cleanse the skin, remove makeup more thoroughly, and keep skin looking and feeling bright and beautiful.  Then came the Clarisonic Mia (a smaller version of the Clarisonic device and perfect for traveling and every beauty bag whether you have a standard size or not).  But what I love MOST about the Mia is the fabulous color selection.

For more information on the Clarisonic family, benefits of using, or to personalize your own Clarisonic device, please visit

Mario Lopez looking good!

Beauty isn't just for her anymore.  In fact, the beauty market for "him" since early Y2K has grown in leaps and bounds.   From additional salon services such as brow grooming or waxing to skincare and hair care, men around the world are tapping into the look good-feel good world of beauty. team members caught up with Mario Lopez looking better than ever with sun kissed skin and perfectly groomed hair in August of 2011.  With a true Hollywood smile and looking this great, we thought we'd share a few great tips for men everywhere to get that Mario look.

Hair:  For a cleaner neckline, have your salon professional remove hair around the nape with waxing services.  This keeps hair looking neat and clean for a longer period of time.

Skin:  Exfoliate daily with a mild facial scrub or clarifying toner for the face.   This helps remove layers of dead surface cels and keeps skin looking and feeling bright and radiant.

To avoid shine on the skin, use a tissueu throughout the day or oil blotting papers to keep excess oil pulled AWAY from the skin.  This also helps prevent clogging of pores and congestion in the skin.

Be sure to visit your salon professional once every 4-5 weeks for routine updates in your hair care services and to keep hair looking its best.

Enjoy these great beauty tips, inspired by Hollywood's own Mario Lopez.  The beauty team of
