Back to School Beauty

Summer is in full swing and we're already seeing ads and articles for back to school.  So what's in this season and what are you going to need?

The biggest rule of thumb on this one is to keep it simple.  If you recall the back to school scene with Drew Barrimore in Never Been Kissed, her idea of returning to school was a bit over the top.  If you haven't seen the movie - it's a must see.

With beauty and trend varying from region to region, be sure to do your homework.   Look at what others are doing and what's being offered by your local retailers, and avoid overdoing it.  Here are my top beauty tips for back to school beauty this season.

Classic denim and white tops are perfect for every day wear (I personally prefer dark denim).  Whether a simple polo or a classic T, white shirts and tops are a safe bet and always trendy.  If you're worried about designs on your jeans pockets, don't stress.   You can always go for a more casual look and leave the shirt untucked.

For her:  The classic ponytail works every time.  It's simple, timeless, and polished.
For him:  I like a more unstructured look with a soft and natural neckline, and a little hair touching the ears.

Light powder and gloss works every time without making too grand a statement.

While I enjoy looking nice and playing dress-up, labels aren't as important to me as feeling great in the clothes I am wearing, and knowing I have a great look and fit.

Salon Events

Billy Lowe judges a bridal hair competition 2010.
If you're a salon or day spa looking to spice up your season, why not have a salon event, a salon beauty event, or makeover campaign.  Or, if you're a client and would like to encourage your salon professional to add a little zing, encourage  salon events or promotions of some kind to boost energy, create excitement, and have a little fun.

Salon events are a great deal of fun for everyone involved.  Often times, product manufacturers are excited and thrilled to help support an in-salon event and many times provide samples or complimentary services to support the excitement such as hand massages, make-up applications, or even light catering.  Over the years I have helped coordinate many special events for salons across the country, as well as retailers looking to showcase new products and seasonal promotions.   We don't have to wait until holiday season to have fun in the workplace.  By having salon events you're offering a little something special for your clients and staff alike and you're giving everyone something to look forward to.

For Billy Lowe salon events or opportunities, please visit our EVENTS PAGE to find out more.

If you're adding a dash of hair color this summer, you don't need to overdo it to get a great new look.

Ask your salon professional for face-frame highlights to brighten the facial features and tone with a sandy beige, or caramel colored glaze for soft blending and a better than natural sun-kissed look.

What to ask for:
1:  8-10 foils working from the forehead back
2:  2-3 foils along the temple area at a 45 degree angle from the front to back
3.  Glaze or tone as needed and follow up with a deep conditioning treatment in-salon

In many cases, you may not need a glaze or toner if you're going for a very subtle lift.   Simply leave foils on for 3-5 minutes (or until desired brightness is achieved).  When removing foils, your stylist will work quickly to remove color and give a great new look to your hair for summertime fun.

Remember to take home the prescribed retail products to keep your hair looking its best, and to help retain your color.

Celebrity Hair Tips

A summertime consultation.
When your summertime hair feels more like a summertime haystack, everyone wants to know what to do, and how to bring back life and luster to their manes.  Never fear, we have great hair tips here that even celebrities use to help support healthy and shiny hair.

1.  Never let hair dry just after swimming in the pool or at the beach.  Chlorine and salt water can dry in the hair and harden causing a dehydrated look and feel.  This can lead to tangling, breakage, and color fading.   Try to find a convenient location to shampoo and condition immediately after swimming.

2.  Apply a pre-condition treatment to hair prior to swimming.  This helps coat the hair and prevents excess build up of chlorine or salt-water, as well as excessive sun damage.

3.  To add condition and shine to hair, add a dime sized amount of a silicone serum or hair shine serum to conditioner, and leave on for 5-7 minutes.    Rinse with warm water and style as normal.

4.  Go easy on excessive heat and styling during excessive weather conditions.  This will help give hair a break from heat and damage, giving more healthy and natural results.

5.  Always work with your salon professional during summertime fun to be sure you are using the right products and tools.

Most of all, enjoy your time this season and stay tuned for continued summertime beauty tips each and every week from the red carpet and Billy Lowe.

Salon Savings

Today, with more and more online offers being presented, how are salons and clients to maintain their relationships with each being devoted to the other?

If you love your stylist, why stray?  However, if you are unhappy with your cut or color, online promotions might be a great way to find someone new.  They can, on the other hand, be a risky way to have your hair done especially if the salon or stylist is a "new-comer" to the industry.  Here are my top tips for getting a great value, maintaining a great relationship w/ your stylist, or searching out a new one.

  1. Do your homework!   Look at how long the stylist or salon has been in business, credits or events they have worked on, etc.
  2. Ask for referrals.  It's always best when someone you know refers you to a great stylist.    This makes the relationship more meaningful for everyone.
  3. If you are purchasing an online "deal of the day" once again, do your homework, visit the company's website, ask questions and research.  Stick with the basics.   Purchase blow-outs or deep conditioning treatments on your first visit to "test drive" the service levels and experience.   Then use your best judgment to book future services based on the experience you've had.
  4. Ask your current salon about promotions they may have that match or come near to something else you may be considering.  Chances are, your salon would rather offer you a one-time promotion than lose you forever.
For these and more great beauty tips, keep checking back for exciting updates and information.

Lip Liner Tips

Remember the gorgeous pink lips in the 80's, with the charcoal black lip liner?

Well only in some parts of town.   Nowadays, a subtle lip is really hot yet some lips still need a little definition.

Billy Lowe applies the perfect lip liner for 10 Years Younger

To avoid overly lined looking lips, here are a few hot tips.

1.  Gently exfoliate lips using a soft head toothbrush and a gentle facial cleanser.  Gently is the keyword - and only for 10-15 seconds.  We also recommend using the Clarisonic facial cleanser for overall facial cleansing and exfoliation.
2.  Apply moisture to lips (we recommend Burts Bees lip balm) and follow up with a light lip gloss or colored lip balm of your choice.
3.  AFTER color has been applied, line with a subtle liner (Baby Buff from Clinique works great) and reapply gloss as needed.

This will give you a subtle line, great definition, and seamless blending. Enjoy.

These and other great celebrity beauty tips are available here at    Keep checking back.

Summer hydration

Simply put - stay hydrated this summer!   From summer sun to central air, moisture can be taken from us at every turn.  So here are a few quick tips for keeping moisture balance in the skin and air.

#1 - Apply moisturizer right after your shower or bath to help lock hydration in.
#2 - Keep a spray mister with you at all times and lightly mist if you feel dehydrated
#3 - Keep a pot of water by your bed if you do not have a humidifier.  Water evaporates and will be better than not having any in the air at all.  Though you won't notice a dramatic difference, it still helps.
#4 - DRINK LOTS OF WATER.    Don't overdo it, but remember to hydrate as needed.

Enjoy your summer.

Beauty travel must haves

This season, it's all about saving time, money and storage space!   Beauty on the run should be quick and easy.

I believe everyone should have a grab-and-go bag!  It's as easy as stopping by the department store and buying a few sample sized bottles, labeling them, and filling them with your favorite beauty products at home.  For the frequent traveler, I recommend having a grab-and-go bag already prepared so that when you do travel, you don't have to think about what's in the bag, you already know.

My top product must haves:
1.  Hairspray - you just can't leave home without it!
2.  A small comb/mini-brush for styling on the go.
3.  Cotton/Q-tips as bare necessities
4.  Moisturizer - perfect for every occasion!
5.  Mascara and lipgloss - must haves for every beauty bag
6.  The obvious such as toothbrush, toothpaste, personal items, etc

Make your travels quick and easy this summer by pre-packing everything you need into a small beauty or personals bag.   You'll save a lot of money, and you won't have to recreate a check list over and over.  Enjoy the season.

Spiral Perm Question

Dear Billy:    I want to get a spiral perm in my hair but I have recently colored my hair and was told I can not perm my hair with it colored.  Your suggestions?

Dear Client:   Yes, you CAN perm your hair after color.   There are many solutions for you nowadays with chemical procedures and we have done beautiful work in the salon for clients who do want more movement in their hair.  Chemical companies have grown to realize that clients often enjoy (and need) more than one chemical procedure and are working closely in the labs to develop products and formulas that are safe for chemically processed hair.  Here are my top recommendations on this, however.

#1 - Work with a stylist who KNOWS chemicals, and who does his or her homework on chemical procedures, ingredients, and safety.
#2 - I recommend waiting 3-5 days in between these 2 services.
#3 -Depending on the color desired,  I would apply the perm first.   If you apply color and then perm your hair, the color will fade quickly.

As always, follow your salon professionals tips when it comes to product usage, don't self prescribe your products, and again, work with a trusted professional who is experienced at double process services.

Bridal Makeover Party

Hannah Lowe wedding.  Hair & Make-up: Billy Lowe
What's more fun than trying on dresses and rings?

"Well, nothing really!" you might say.  But a fun weekend with all the (girl)friends and a fabulous make-over party might just come close.  Before you walk down the aisle, spend some time with your BFFs and schedule a weekend makeover party.  Whether you're painting one another's nails or calling in the professionals (we certainly recommend this for your hair), it's really a lot of fun to plan a makeover weekend for the bridal party and perhaps the moms.

Here's the LOWE DOWN on a fabulous makeover weekend for the bride and her friends.

Friday Night:  The get-together.  Plan a relaxing evening with light bites, toasts of merriment, and perhaps a fun movie or games.   This gets everyone reacquainted, gives time to set up accommodations, and allows travelers time to relax and unwind.

Saturday:  The day of fun and beauty.  Start with a pamering mani/pedi to set the day off right.  Then it's off to your favorite hair salon for a blow-out or perhaps a facial.   By noon or a little thereafter you're ready for lunch somewhere fabulous and the rest of the night is all yours.  We recommend theater, an exciting show (ladies if you're in Vegas - there's obviously plenty to see), or perhaps back to the house for some Trivial Pursuit.

Sunday:  Why not start the day with a great brunch before everyone departs.  Many brides actually schedule a makeover weekend for their wedding but if this is not the case for you and this was just a fun "pre-wedding" weekend, then we say good for you.   The more beauty - the better.

But this was just a fun and simple schedule for things to do as you plan and prepare for your exciting day.  For lots of great wedding vendors or wedding advice, visit my friends at

Though we're already into summer season, fall and winter weddings are right around the corner.  Book a makeover event with Billy Lowe and team for your upcoming wedding and special events.

Salon Consultations

My consultation with Susan.

One of the most important elements of any salon visit is the salon consultation.  Taking time with your beauty professional, whether it's cut, color, waxing or nails, is very helpful to you and the professional in getting exactly what you want from your visit.  So many clients arrive at the top of the hour for their appointment with no time to spare for communication, new ideas, or feedback.  But in addition to adding a few minutes to your appointment by arriving early, how is one to communicate with the salon professional in order to make the most of the experience?

First of all, I say bring tear sheets. I know many stylists disagree, but I think it's a great way to reduce any room for error.  Not only is it good for you to describe what you want in cut or color, it's also good that you have a visual for what you are looking for.   If a client says "short" that can mean 20 different things.  But if I see a visual of her (or his) version of short, then I have a better idea of what the look is.  Additionally, I recommend writing out a few words beside the images to describe the look you are going for.  Descriptions (as detailed as possible) help your hair stylist deliver more closely what you are looking for.  The same thing applies for color.   "Brunette" can have countless possibilities, as can blonde.   Does this mean a solid color to you?  Do you like dimension in your color?  How warm, how cool?

Secondly, as I said before, arrive early.  I was told once "If you're on time - you're late!"   And it's true.  If 5 clients have an 11:00a.m. appointment and they are all trying to get into a smock at the same time, it creates delays and back-up.  So be early, relax, and unwind.

Next, be sure to follow up with your hair stylist or salon professional after the appointment to let her or him know how you like the results.  This is a great training tool for the stylist.  If they don't hear back from you, they may never know.

And finally, understand that the first visit isn't always perfection.  We don't learn to ride a bike on our first try, and if you are new to a salon professional, it may take a time or two before she or he really comes to understand your hair.

There is so much to consider during your salon consultation.  Be as precise as possible, make it a conversation and you'll be a lot closer to getting the results you want.   Have fun, and enjoy your new "do."

Salon Appointments

It may not be on everyone's mind, but your salon appointment is still one of the most important events to calendar!

For many years, a large number of my clients have booked their salon appointments out for the entire year.  We look at their last year's schedule, and make a plan for the coming year.  I usually do this around October and November each year for the upcoming year.  But in a city like Los Angeles, where we barely commit to dinner with friends, how in the world are we supposed to commit to a salon appointment a year in advance, or even 4 weeks in advance?

"But I don't know where I'm going to be."  You say.

Too often we make excuses for why we should not do something - when in fact it could perhaps be the best thing for us in honoring ourselves with a little relaxation and pamper time.  Most of us work pretty routine jobs, and have pretty routine lives, and unless we are sick or get called out, we pretty much do know our schedules.  So I say - put yourself on your own calendar, honor your time with a little fun and relaxation, pre-book that next appointment.   Besides, you can always change it!

Hair care in a tough economy!

Let's face it.    We are in some interesting economic times and people are cutting corners at every turn.

While we'd like to think that the salon industry is exempt because people do need to have their hair cut, clients everywhere are looking for ways to space out their services, make the color last a little longer, or perhaps the dreaded D.I.Y. syndrome (Do It Yourself).

One of the biggest risks that people take when they try to cut or color themselves is making a big "uh-oh" that will end  up costing a fortune to correct. Color correction is very expensive in time and dollars.  The ten dollar box of hair color at the store can end up costing $200 or $300 to correct if the color goes bad.   And most likely it will.   Your salon professional is trained in how to apply color, how to match previous color, how to analyze desired outcomes and contributing pigment of your hair, and color placement.   All of these things are taken into account when it comes to applying hair color.

Another big mistake I always see is people trying to cut their own bangs.  What a disaster this can turn out to be. From cutting too much to uneven sections, it is very difficult (even for professionals) to cut your own hair.

Rule of thumb:  While saving money is great during these times, it's still very important to trust your salon professional with your hair.   Otherwise, you might be making a very costly mistake!

Salon Services At Home

Often times, clients' schedules are such that they prefer to have some salon services provided in-home.   These might include blow-outs, massage therapy, nails, waxing, etc.   While cut and color is a bit more challenging to do in the home unless the client has a built-in salon area, having basic services in the home are indeed a luxury and a convenience.

If you are in need of professional salon services in the home, many salons have in-home programs, and stylists on call for services as such.   There may be an additional fee for travel, mileage or gas, but when it comes to avoiding traffic, saving yourself a little time, and paying a little more for the convenience, in-home salon services might be just for you.

Additional fees that might be considered for in-home salon services:
1.  $15-$20 for a travel fee
2.  Some beauty professionals charge double the service fee for in-home
3.  It is not uncommon for many salons or stylists to bill by the hour for in-home services with a 2 hour minimum no matter how long they stay
4.  I would encourage a small gratuity as well for the stylist who sees you in-home

Enjoy, stay beautiful, and enjoy the season.

With a message to "keep wildlife in the wild" believes their "mission is to end the suffering of wild animals in captivity, rescue individual animals in need, protect wildlife — including highly endangered species — in their natural habitats, and encourage compassionate conservation globally."

Hair Cut Disasters

Have you ever cut your own hair and end up feeling like "a dummy?"

There's nothing worse than attempting to snip the bangs or add your own idea of facial framing, only to turn around and wonder how quickly you can find a salon open - at 8:45PM on Friday evening.

My thoughts:  NEVER DO IT YOURSELF.

When you try to cut your own hair, your fingers are often in the way distorting your vision.  Your hands bend so you can see around them, and it's hard to cut looking at a reflection of what you're doing.  Stylists have a clear view of what they are doing and their steps are very guided and clear.

My tip:   Trust your salon professional, plan ahead, and don't wait til the last minute to cut your hair or schedule your salon services.    And finally, NEVER walk into a salon based on an emotional response to something like a break-up.   You may just regret it in the morning.

The perfect curl

There's nothing better than that perfect Marilyn curl, loosely placed, and then shaken out.

I love accidental hair, care-free hair, and hair that's a little tousled.  But be careful of overheating the hair during curl placement.   While it's true that "dirty hair" is great for California Curls, you can still get this look from start to finish.

1.  Shampoo and style as usual.
2.  Apply a protective detangler, and a styling cream or serum, and blow-dry completely in normal manner.  I recommend using a metal round brush for smooth effects. My favorite are the Olivia Garden Thermal Round Brushes
3.  Rather than curling from ends to root, work the other way around.  It's best to start at the root area, and curl working down the hair shaft so you avoid overheating the ends.
4.  To keep the curl pattern steady, wrap warm/finished curls around your fingers and clip to scalp area as you finish working the rest of the hair.  This allows cooling and setting time.
5.  When completely cooled (I recommend 10-15 minutes to set), release the curls, finger toss, or blow dry lightly with a dryer on a cool setting.

THE RESULT:  Gorgeous tousled locks that say "come touch me!"

Gluten Free Goodies

Gluten Free Finds.

I have to be honest - I've never been that concerned with vegetarian this, gluten free that, or fat free the other.  I'm a sweet tea boy through and through.

But many people have moved toward vegetarianism, gluten and dairy free diets, and living in California, it's pretty hard to ignore. Lately, however, I've been a bit more open to the idea of gluten free/dairy free, and sensitivities to food preparation altogether. I've become even more tuned in to eating at home and preparing my own meals.  Two nights ago I was ordering small bites at a restaurant which, when delivered, were passed through a crowd of 500 people from the kitchen to me, and I can't imagine how many coughs or sneezes adorned my plates before I actually partook. I'd much rather have eaten at home.

Today while strolling down the Pampers aisle (not that I have kids but it was the next turn so I took it), I noticed the cereal across the way.   Interesting placement of retail don't you think?   Screaming babies - a quick grab of cereal to pacify them and you're off.  Smart retailers he sighs.

But if we're going to eat cereal, drink milk or enjoy a nice steak, isn't it worth it to spend a buck more for lean, conscious products that support our bodies?  I've personally never had an issue with cereal, lettuce or cheese, but enjoyed seeing today that my childhood favorite products are working toward providing more options for more people.

If you do have diet sensitivities, there are so many options for you.   Or if you're a "normie" like me,  it still might bid you well to pay attention to what's on the box, or what's in the bag.  Here's to your beauty, here's to your health.

Fireworks and Hair Color

This 4th of July (and every holiday hereafter) make sure your colorist knows his craft.

I can't tell you how many times I see gaps in color, misplaced highlights, poor base color selections, and color that fades out into nothing less than disaster!

You'll know you're working with a great colorist when they listen to what you want, but offer suggestions on keeping color balance,  not straying too far from your own natural color, work carefully throughout the color process, and are able to fully educate you on the hair color experience.  Be sure to let your stylist know what your previous color experience has been, give him/her the full scoop, so there aren't any missing pieces.

Here's what a stylist has to consider when coloring your hair!
1.  Is there previous color
2.  How often you color your hair
3.  Did you do it yourself
4.  What is the desired outcome
5.  Is there grey-coverage to consider
6.  How much time is a client willing to come in for touch-ups

and so much more.    This is why I always encourage clients to work with a professional colorist who knows what he or she is doing.

Here's to colorful fireworks, here's to fabulous hair color.
Billy Lowe and team.
