Color correction - going darker - adding low-lights

Believe it or not, many clients this year are opting for darker tones, dimensional color and settling out of much of the "beach blonde" look.   With summer in full swing, hair has a tendency to become lighter (or over processed) due to sun exposure, lack of timely salon appointments during high travel seasons, and enjoying a little surf to cool off this season.  I love the look of the deeper tones we're seeing and lots of people are sporting this great look!

My suggestions:

  • Talk with your stylist about adding lowlights to your color.   This is a secondary color added in for more depth, dimension and beautiful results.
  • Be sure you're protecting your hair this summer with wide-brim hats from my friends at
  • Chat with your stylist about which products you should be using this season
  • Ask your stylist about adding a color glaze 1-2 shades darker than the color you have now .  A word of warning, this isn't always as simple as mixing color and adding.  Many times, color correction procedures have to be applied to replace lost color - before adding the final color.

Summer Hair Color

Everyone's talking about summertime hair color. Should I lighten up? Should I go red? Should I add dimension? Or should I just have a natural fade-out tone?

These are all great questions. Our biggest piece of advice at the Billy Lowe beauty team is to collect pieces of inspiration, or notice people's hair that you admire. It's as simple as cutting out a few tear sheets from a magazine, or asking someone "Who does your hair?" Summertime hair color (and overall hair care) is really important. We recognize that many of you travel during this time so routine visits with your salon professional may not be as frequent. Be sure to follow these SIZZLING SUMMERTIME TIPS when it comes to your hair care.

  1. Ask your salon professional which color is best for you this season.
  2. Use the products and tools as prescribed by your salon professional and avoid self-prescribing!
  3. Look, Listen, and Learn as your salon professional styles your hair for that perfect summertime do!
  4. Avoid going too long in between salon appointments so your hair always looks its best. One week's delay can mean the difference in "time to get in" versus "oh this horrible hair."
Stay tuned for more great tips and ideas this summer as we bring you all our findings from the sunshine land of Southern California. Whether by the beach or on the road, we'll be speaking to you very soon. Thanks for stopping by.
