Wash Your Hands

Is your make-up artist washing her hands between services?

I was listening to the radio this morning about a report on ecoli and what was one of the first things they mentioned? The make-up counter at your local department store.

Bays like Clinique, Mac, Estee Lauder, and Chanel all feature help-yourself make-up areas, and artists who can give you this season's hottest look. But is the make-up sanitary? Not usually - thanks to the DIY (do it yourself) maven who puts the tube of lipstick right on her lips and walks away.

Ladies, please ask for assistance at the make-up bays and for heavens' sake - please don't touch make-up containers to your skin for everyone else's sanitation and hygiene - and that of your own.

The BEST way to apply make-up at the bays is

1 - Ask for help
2 - Be sure your make-up artist has washed her (or his) hands
3 - Use disposable applicators (cotton, q-tips) to apply make-up for hygiene purposes
4 - If using professional applicators, be sure they have been cleansed
5 - Ask your make-up artist to scrape away a layer of lipstick before applying

Salon appointments

Don't fret. Just remember to pre-book your salon appointments before leaving. This ensures a quality visit for the future, secures your booking with your stylist, and prevents last-minute scheduling mishaps because you didn't plan ahead.

Service with a Smile!

Whatever happened to SERVICE WITH A SMILE? I frequent a local restaurant here in Los Angeles and wow what it takes to get a smile!!!!!

"What do you want to drink?" The waiter barked.

It's like putting eggs in the same bag as your bleach at the grocery store. Waiting tables and bagging groceries are both a dying art.

BILLY'S SUGGESTION: Patronize friendly and personable establishments known for their service. They could put dog food on the table and I wouldn't care - but when it comes to service - there's no substitute!!!

Boys it's as easy as 1, 2, 3. Here are some basic "do's" for your shaving.

1 - Be sure your skin, tools, and water are nice and warm (I recommend comfortably hot). Never shave "cold."

2 - Shave in the shower. It should be the LAST thing you do. Shampoo, wash face and body, and rinse. Use a mild facial scrub to lift beard (or other body hair) to prep for shaving. This makes an easier/softer cut.

3 - AVOID CHEAP RAZOR BLADES. The single blade cheapies are the worst. I like a double or triple blade with a comfort gel pad.

4 - NEVER SHAVE UP when shaving under the chin. This is a sure way to get cuts, scrapes and in-grown hairs. Painful!!!

When you shave this way, the steam from the shower softens the beard, the facial scrub has prepped skin & beard, and by shaving LAST, it makes an easier cut with less nicks and ouchies.

OK everyone. Last night I attended a bridal expo with all the bells and whistles. There were chocolate bars, cakes, flowers, music and the room was so beautifully put together. My FAVORITE vendor for the evening was a fabulous company called THE STICKY PIG. These are little candied bacons with the flavor and texture of sweet, salty, spicy, sticky and crunchy all in one delectible bite. I sat down with the owner Tara Simon to find out more.

BL: How would you describe your service?
TS: Right now I'm mostly internet/retail based, branching out into catering. It's great for fine gifts, party favors, weddings,

BL: How did you start The Sticky Pig and what is it exactly?
TS: The Sticky Pig started in November 2009, and it's waht I call basic candied bacon. Bacon with brown sugar, pop it in the over until it's sweet & gooey. I then took it to the next level, adding different flavors and texure combinations .

BL: What does a person experience when they first taste The Sticky Pig:
TS: Sometimes they don't know what to expect, but after they taste it, there's a lot going on. It's the combination of sweets, salts, and some say it doesn't even taste like bacon.

BL: What is your favorite Sticky Pig Selection?
TS: That's a hard one - but I would say my favorite is the apple, pecan dulce de leche.

That's it. YOU MUST try these little delicious treats. Visit THE STICKY PIG for more info.

A fun (true) salon story.

I had a client once named Jennifer who took her mother on vacation to her family's lodge in the mountains. It was her mother's first time in an airplane at the ripe old age of 70 (something) believe it or not. Jennifer helped escort her mother back to their seat when boarding the plane and encouraged her mother to take the window seat. After careful thought and consideration the mother turned to Jennifer and said:

"Dear, I've just had my hair done and I'd rather not sit by the window."

Talk about a salon chuckle. This was truly the "highlight" of my day. Happy Monday everybody!

Wedding Hair - Salons and Bridal Season

Hair and makeup by Billy Lowe
As your wedding day gets closer - be sure you are planning ahead for your salon and beauty services.

There's nothing worse than getting right up to your wedding day with no concrete plans or pre-bookings for your hair or makeup services.  Wedding Day Hair is a critical part of the day for the bride and everyone else.

Here are my top suggestions for securing beautiful wedding day hair on your special day.

  1. Don't wait too long for your first consultation and run-through.  Delays creates last minute confusion not only in getting people scheduled but the overall wedding day vision as well.
  2. Take plenty of photos for inspiration, and remember to take photos while you are at your hair rehearsal.
  3. Pre-book ALL appointments needed for cut and color services leading up to your wedding day
  4. Confirm your beauty professional's availability one week prior to your wedding as a reminder to him or her about your special day
  5. Get creative, add feathers and flair
  6. Do not let your brides maids drive separately! One of them will surely get lost!
Most of all - have fun. It's your big day, and one you've long waited for.

While it might be fun to try a new restaurant or have a nice boating excursion, online "deals" aren't always the best for beauty services. Be careful who you go to, and the services they are offering.

I participated in 2 online promo offerings as part of a research effort - and found that it creates inconsistent clientele - who often never return unless there's another deal.   Clients - this creates hardship for your beauty professional and can create inconsistent results for you.

And remember to book your next appointment before leaving!

Fiery Red - Tilda Swinton

To get this fiery red look, ask your salon professional for a red kicker in your color but be sure you aren't straying too far from your own natural tones or you may get uneven results.

Reds take time, patience, and a great commitment with frequent touch-ups needed to keep color results looking their best. If you are moving into reds, ask your salon professional how much upkeep it will require, land be sure you are working with the right "at-home" products to prevent color fading. Most importantly, don't self prescribe color enhancing shampoos unless recommended by your salon professional.

Sarah Jessica Parker - Vogue

Great color - Great cover.

To prevent creasing lip color, place tissue over lips and powder through with transluscent powder and a powder puff AFTER color is applied. If needed, reapply gloss to surface or lightly line lips after powder. This helps set lip color and prevents running or creasing. To separate lashes, use a clean mascara brush and stroke through from top side to isolate and separate lashes. This gives a clearner/softer (less messy) look.

Smokey Eyes - with a cotton ball!

Go from day-time to night-time with the stroke of cotton.

Simply use a cotton ball to apply shadows to eye-lids for a simple/smokey look. What's more, this keeps make-up hygiene safe because you dispose of the cotton when done. One stroke - voila. You're ready for a night out on the town.

Always flirty, always classy, Reese the hair and make-up team at Billy Lowe loves you.

Why this cut & color works for many!

1 - Soft textured bangs - not too heavy or weighted
2 - Soft movement along neck and shoulders creates delicate balance
3 - Brilliant blonding and highlights for soft natural results
4 - An overall carefree, hassle free look that is easy to maintain whether you wash and wear or blow-dry.

With any hair color or style, be sure you protect the ends especially as hair grows past shoulder area.  Occasional shine treatments in the salon keeps hair soft and luxurious, and frequent visits for trims and touch-ups are recommended especially for longer hair types.

Does your face shape really matter??

I'm asked all the time about face shapes and hair styles. While I think there's some general guidelines we can follow, I don't believe the rules are hard and fast.  I also believe that not ever rule fits every face shape and that there is always room for creativity, flexibility and bending the rules just a bit!

I can give every face shape the perfect cut & style, but if the client can't recreate the look I give them, or if they find the hair style too difficult to maintain, they'll ultimately be frustrated and dislike the look completely. What this means to me is that the client probably won't take care of their hair because it was too challenging, and most likely won't come back again.

My biggest beauty tip when considering a hair style is based on the following:

  • Will it fit your lifestyle? How much time do you have to style your hair and what are you willing to do to take care of it?  Are you a working professional?  A person on the go?  Do you have time to style your hair?
  • What styling tools and hair products are you comfortable working with?   If the answer is NONE, then I know you may need a simpler cut & style that's easy for you to maintain on a daily basis.  In this case, we definitely want to think outside the box (and possibly bend the rules of face shapes just a bit).
  • Do you want wash and wear or something you have to maintain?

If I can tap into these general clues FIRST, then we can create a look that will not only fit your features, but will also fit your lifestyle! From there, you'll be more inclined to take care of it, spend time, etc.

Check out THIS LINK for my segment on the Hallmark Home and Family show on Face Shapes.

Don't get bogged down by the "rules of the game" or what your "face shape" is all about.  Rules are made to be broken and beauty is truly an individual thing. Have fun - be beautiful - and love your hair. After all, it's an accessory and an investment.

News - PIC: Jessica Simpson Poses Without Makeup for Marie Claire - Style

It's amazing what a little make-up (remover) can do. Great Job MC on the HOT HOT cover. No panty-hose needed for this camera lens. Jessica looks amazing. Soft toussled hair, I'd say these locks definitely rock. I think the braid is a little Pocahontas, but seems to work. No "hair-do" needed here.

Kate Gosselin's Dancing Routine - Dancing with the Stars -

A bit uncomfortable to watch.
Kate our team would love to work with you for a day and teach you how to work a pair of pumps.

For style & grace, there's nothing better than running a vacuum cleaner with your high-heels on. Reach-step-step. Reach-step-step. It's the oldest drag secret in the book. Why do you think those queens look so good on stage?

Wanna learn how to dance or walk? Throw on a pair of heels and run the vacuum cleaner for an hour.Kate, there's a lady in there somewhere - now take off the football jersey and let us see her!

Kate Gosselin - Hair Do or Hair Don't?

As if Octo-Mom weren't enough, seems media makes a huge frenzie out of people that have kids and rocket them into stardom. Kate - ride it baby (ahem).

Obviously - Kate has a lot of hair. With her petite features she is swallowed in mane and I think the blonding is much too bright.

Billy's suggesion:

  1. Cut away at the fringe area just a bit more for a lighter (more textured) look. This will lighten the facial framing and add softer movement.
  2. Add occasional low-lights for more dimension in the color
  3. Keep the curls loose (as they are) with a larger barrel curling iron and finishing with a soft-hold spray.

'TRANSform Me' Ladies: Who'd You Rather?

LOVE IT. This is one make-over show you can't miss.

Trans-Gendered ladies help straight hopefuls look and feel their best with top to bottom make-overs. Girls if you can't get it from the Queens, who can you get it from.

This takes "Drag Race" to a whole new level. To all you straight women who've always said "She's prettier than a real woman!" well here's your chance to doll it up.

'TRANSform Me' Ladies: Who'd You Rather?

Acqua Panna® Natural Spring Water, which dates back to the Romans, became part of the NestlĂ© Waters North America family of brands in 1999. Acqua Panna® Natural Spring Water, Italy’s most famous spring water, comes from the region of Tuscany and is the ideal still water for dining occasions.

Seriously - this is like the BEST water on the market. I buy the glass bottles b/c of the taste (and because they look fabulous).

It's spring and summer and hydration is very important. So drink up baby. For hair and skin that glows, keep a bottle of water with you this season.

Finding a new hair salon

Yes it's true - when you move you're stressed out about 2 things and 2 things only.

1 - Where you'll shop for groceries

2 - Who will do your hair

I'm in the process of moving and I FREAKED out last night when I went into my new grocery store (which is only 5 minutes from my old one).   The good news is that I don't have to go to the new one - I'm close enough that I can still go to the old one that I love.  The BAD news is - if I moved even further away that wouldn't be possible.

The same thing is true for finding a new hair stylist so listen up to these hot ROCK THE LOCKS tips.

  1. Ask for a referral - Notice someone's hair that you like and ask who does their hair.
  2. Read reviews online.    Check out what others are saying and look at salon websites.
  3. DON'T JUST WALK IN.   OMG you're putting your hair at huge risk by just "walking in."
  4. Take your time.   You dealt with those messy bangs up until now, another day or 2 to find a reputable stylist isn't going to kill you
  5. Take photos of inspiration, and be sure your hairstylist can repeat back to you EXACTLY what you just told him or her.
Most importantly, if you don't feel comfortable, you don't have to book an appointment.   Throw on a hat, pull hair back into a ponytail, or get creative if you have to, but finding a new stylist can be challenging - yet fun at the same time.   Relax and enjoy the ride.

Enjoy - Billy Lowe

Ponytail How To's

Ladies I know it's spring, and summer's right around the corner, but go easy on your hair if you want it to look good for fall.

Ease up on the tension. Pulling hair too tightly causes breakage at the gathering area, as well as pulling at the front. Many people that wear ponytails all the time experience a lot more breakage and fall-out because of the stress and tension on the hair.

Be sure you are using padded rubber bands. Using unpadded rubber bands causes a lot of tension and pull on the hair leading to breakage and unhealthy looking hair.

Be sure to wear sunscreen. Pulling hair back and off the face exposes the face and neck area to more sun. Be sure these areas of the skin are protected. I recommend wearing wide brim hats.

Repent from your self-prescribing

Those of you that are hacking away at your own locks, or mixing and blending your own color out of a box - cut it out!!! At the very least, put yourself on a quarterly plan to visit your hair stylist. My personal recommendation is every 6 to 8 weeks, but if you can't make it that often, hit it once every 3 months.

This program also works because it keeps you in with seasonal trend and up comings.
  • January - New Year
  • April - Spring Trend
  • July - Fall Trend
  • October - Moves you into holiday trend
You can shift this around 1 or 2 weeks before or after but those are my recommendations for visiting your salon professional if a 6-8 week program doesn't work out for you. But above all - STOP DOING IT YOURSELF!!!!

Iron Man 2 - Scarlett Johansson rocks the locks!!!

We interrupt this regularly scheduled program - as this blog is over-heating!

While much of Hollywood uses wigs and hair pieces, I love the dark color on Scarlett - wig or not! Warm mahoganies look amazing against her cherry colored lips in this movie campaign poster. My make-up team suggests air-brushed make-up for that perfect application.

To get Scarlett's look: Shampoo & condition as normal and use a styling gel or cream. Taking small 1" sections, make small twisties in hair and diffuse dry. Keep twisties loose while you work. If they are too tight they'll have a straight effect and won't hold the curl. Or, you can use a 1" barrel curling iron and work in small sections as you curl hair all the way up to root area.

The smaller the sections for this style, the cleaner & tighter the curl. Finish with a texture spray or firm hold spray and scrunch through as you spray. We look forward to seeing Scarlett rock the locks in this movie.

Taylor Swift and Cory Monteith: Supposedly Dating!

Taylor definitely rocks the locks.

To get Taylor's look - use a 1 inch curling iron all over & mist with a light-hold spray. Allow time to cool & set, then shake loose with fingers and hair dryer on cool setting.

Billy's suggestion - I wanna see Taylor with a straight/polished look a little more often. It's fabulous.

The Shag - 5 Sexiest Short Cuts - Spring Beauty 2010 - Beauty - InStyle

Really Garren? This cut reminds me of a bowl haircut that forgot to get cut in the back. Disconnect and unflattering.

While I'm loving the color against her milk-bath skin, I much prefer softer lines and movement. These shag styles are here today - gone today. Just a bit too harsh looking for my taste.

Billy's suggestion: Great length at the shoulder area, grow midsections to fill in, and allow longer side-swept bang.

Billy Lowe meets Perez Hilton

Perez Hilton gets a cut & style with celebrity hair stylist Billy Lowe for his 32nd Birthday Bash.

When the world's most infamous celebrity blogger throws himself a birthday party, nobody sends regrets. So the "carn-evil" for Perez Hilton's 32nd at Paramount Studios recently was populated with the likes of Justin Bieber, Ashley Tisdale, Lindsay Lohan, Leona Lewis, Shannon Doherty, John Stamos, Audrina Patridge, Paula Abdul, Taryn Manning and Mel B. Lewis performed, along with Eve, Katy Perry and a special performance by none other than Liza Minnelli. (Perry's entrance on an actual elephant took the award for show-stopping moment!) And thanks to Joico, all of the VIPs and guests left with a fabulous assortment of the company's most popular hair care products.

The company also had a very special birthday gift for the original "gossip girl." Joico Celebrity Guest Artist Billy Lowe primped Perez for his bash with a fierce haircut and style. (Billy turned the tables on the dish diva and revealed a bit of gossip of his own--he used Joico Design Collection Pliable Paste and Texture Spray to finish Perez's look!) According to a Hilton spokesperson, "Perez loved how his hair turned out!" After the cut & style, the guest of honor was more than ready for his birthday blowout!

Joico was part of a line up of sponsors for the bash that included Alize, Arizona Tea and Fatburger. The company gifted VIPs and guests with K-PAK, K-PAK Color Therapy, Daily Care, Moisture Recovery, Color Endure, Body Luxe, Design Collection and Silk Result.

"Perez's new look is hot, sexy, and easy to maintain." says Lowe. "I created great texture and shape throughout the sides and the top, and added a soft natural neckline in the back. This look can be worn clean and simple, or edged out with a little shaping clay. I think he looks great."

Lowe, who has styled hair for countless Hollywood A-Listers owns his own private hair studio conveniently located in West Hollywood, CA. Booked by appointment only, Lowe's exclusive clients enjoy one-on-one time and attention, away from the distractions of traditional salon settings. With brilliant cut & color services topping every menu item, clients can also enjoy lunch delivery services from some of West Hollywood's finest eateries. To book your own appointment with Billy Lowe, please visit www.billylowe.com or call 323-654-2819.
