What do I take when I travel???

As the snow-birds begin preparing to leave their nests for yet another soon-to-come winter, they’re all a chatter about what to take on that trip to warm sunny Palm Springs or the Caribbean. Here are my top tips for traveling whether we're wrapping up summer or preparing for seasons ahead.

When we travel for vacation, we should remember to relax and enjoy. Chances are - the styles you wear at home won’t be the same as at your destination. Over-coiffing will only make you stand out. For example, a simple pony tail will get you from a casual outing to a nice dinner. Use a low tie-back and a side part for a more classy look. While you may need to bring a styling tool or 2, remember it’s not a beauty pageant. Take the basics - make it easy on yourself - and enjoy your trip.

  • EVERY traveler should have a pre-made “Grab & Go” bag for their styling aid & personals. It’s pre-thought, pre-planned, so when you travel, no thought goes into what you bring or not. It’s all ready to go.
  • A large zip-loc bag will contain all you need. If it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t go. This doesn’t mean pack 2-3 bags. All of your styling aid and many personals will go in one bag. It’s size smart - and prevents messy spills.
  • Styling aid to bring: Shampoo, Conditioner, hairspray, and 1 other styling aid. Small combs, clips and rubber bands will also fit. There may also be room for a few other personals so that everthing is in one place.
  • Use travel size bottles. You can buy 2 & 3oz travel size bottles from your drug store and fill them with your favorite products. It’s always best to use your own products - as they are usually specific to your own hair care needs. Or, ask your stylist for samples. The foil packs are easy to carry along.
  • Team Pack. If you are traveling with friends or family - share the load. No need for 3 or 4 people to bring a hair dryer. Clearly hair dryers & other styling tools won’t fit in the storage bags - and that’s fine. Take the basics.
  • Most hotels have a hair dryer that will work just fine on your trip. Ask the hotel when you are booking if there are hair dryers in the rooms. If not, ask if they have extras in the hotel so you don’t have to pack them.
  • Finally, decide early to wear styles that are quick, simple and easy to achieve. You’ll have a better time (and so will your travel companions).
